A Moment That Hints at the Future

A Moment That Hints at the Future

One of the most beloved traditions of a Korean first birthday celebration is the Dohl-jabi ceremony. The word Dohl refers to the child’s first birthday, and jabi means “to pick” or “to choose.” During this special moment, the child is placed in front of several meaningful objects and encouraged to choose one. The item the child reaches for is playfully interpreted as a glimpse into their future.

The tradition dates back centuries to a time when families celebrated a child reaching their first year of life with deep gratitude. Dohl-jabi became a symbolic way of expressing hopes and wishes for the child’s path in life—whether that be wisdom, prosperity, creativity, or longevity.

Each object placed on the table carries its own meaning.

Thread
A wish for a long and healthy life.

Money
A symbol of prosperity and financial success.

Book
A hope for wisdom, knowledge, and a life of learning.

Brush or Calligraphy Pen
Creativity, artistry, and scholarly achievement.

Rice or Rice Cakes
A life of abundance and never lacking food.

Microphone or Musical Instrument (modern additions)
Talent in the arts or a future in performance.

Today, Dohl-jabi continues to be a joyful highlight of the first birthday celebration. While the meanings are symbolic, the moment itself is treasured—capturing a child’s curiosity, laughter, and the loving hopes that surround them.
