Songpyeon

Songpyeon

A traditional Korean rice cake often featured on first birthday tables, bringing a sense of tradition and celebration. Songpyeon is made from finely milled rice flour dough, typically filled with sweet ingredients such as sesame seeds, red bean paste, or chestnut. The dough is shaped into small half-moon forms and gently steamed over fragrant pine needles, which give the rice cakes their subtle aroma and name—songpyeon, meaning “pine-scented rice cake.”

In Korea, songpyeon is most commonly enjoyed during Chuseok, the harvest festival, when families gather to make and share them together as a symbol of gratitude and abundance. They are also served during meaningful celebrations such as a child’s first birthday (Dohl), where traditional foods represent wishes for good fortune and a prosperous life.

Songpyeon has a soft, slightly chewy texture with a delicate sweetness from the filling. The rice dough itself is mild and lightly fragrant, while the fillings add gentle nutty or sweet flavors, creating a balanced and comforting taste that reflects the warmth of Korean tradition.
